1825A
Artist
Anonymous
Title
The state of a soul in sin
Date
Late 17th or early 18th century
Medium
Engraving. Plate 1 of a set of twelve illustrations on The States of the Soul (Moral Images - Female Series). Conceived by Vincent Huby S. J. (1608 - 1693) for use in female religious retreats. Published by Jacques Chiquet (active early 18th century), rue Saint Jacques, Paris.
Note
The PESSCA Archive does not have a photograph of this engraving. Yet, the website of the Bibliothèque Sainte Geneviève in Paris displays a photograph of a copy of the original engraving. This copy reverses the sense of the original, and bears no indication of its author or of its publisher. Two complete series of impressions of the original engravings are known. Both are in Brittany, in Northwestern France. One of these series illustrates Les Exercises de la Mission, a manuscript with the Jesuit community of Brest; the other illustrates the manuscript on retreats found at Sainte-Anne-d'Auray (see Sauvy 1989, 163).
