Praestet fides supplementum sensuum defectui, the Latin version of the title of this piece, is taken from the Pange Lingua (Praise my tongue), a eucharistic hymn composed by St. Thomas Aquinas at the request of Pope Urban IV for the feast of Corpus Christ, which this pope instituted in 1264. It is also sung in the chant Tantum Ergo Sacramentum.
