Used in the title page of Alfonso de Chirino (ca. 1365 – ca. 1429) Menor daño de medicina […] published by the artists in Seville in 1519. This band —or a close version thereof— was used also (a) in Seville, ca. 1495, by the workshop of Meinardo Ungut (d. 1499) and Estanislao Polono (active between 1491 and 1514) for the title page for Girolamo Savonarola (1452-1498), Deuotissima exposicion sobre el psalmo de Miserere mei deus […] (cf. Penney, List of books printed before 1601 in the library of the Hispanic Society of America, p. 225; Portillo Muñoz, La Ilustración gráfica de los incunables sevillanos, #29 and Fig. 12; Iberian Books #17527) and, possibly, (b) in a Book of Hours published by Juan Cromberger (active between 1527 and 1540; d. 1540) in Seville in 1528 (Colomer Amat 1998-1999, 135). Our illustration is taken from the title page of the work by de Chirino.
