Medium: Etching. This is an ornamental detail of the Nova Orbis Terrarum, a wall map etched in four plates in and published in 1607 by Blaeu in Amsterdam sub signo Solarii deaurati.
Photo Source: No complete version of this map is extant. There is, however, a 9 x 13cm photograph thereof at the Rijksmuseum Nederlands Scheepvaart-Museum in Amsterdam. This photograph was discovered, enlarged, and published by Günter Schilder in 1979. Our image was taken from this publication (cf. Schilder 1979, 38).
